1. The “Top-Down” Strategy
The golden rule of professional cleaning: always start from the ceiling. If you clean the floors first and then dust the ceiling fans, you’ll just have to do the floors all over again.
- Dust Ceiling Fans & Fixtures: Use a damp cloth or a pillowcase to trap dust so it doesn’t fall on your furniture.
- Clear the Cobwebs: Check the high corners of every room.
- Wipe Walls & Baseboards: You’d be surprised how much dust clings to vertical surfaces!
2. Windows and Natural Light
Spring is all about letting the light in.
- Clean the Tracks: Vacuum out the dead bugs and dirt from window tracks before wiping them down.
- Streak-Free Glass: Use a squeegee or a high-quality microfiber cloth. Avoid cleaning windows on a hot, sunny day, as the cleaner will dry too quickly and leave streaks.
- Wash the Screens: Take them outside, spray them with a hose, and scrub gently with soapy water.
3. The Kitchen Deep-Dive
This is usually the most time-consuming room, but also the most rewarding.
- The Fridge Reset: Empty everything. Check expiration dates (goodbye, 2-year-old mustard!), and wipe down every shelf and drawer.
- Degrease the Oven & Stovetop: Use a heavy-duty degreaser or a paste of baking soda and water for a natural alternative.
- Sanitize the Dishwasher: Run a cycle with a bowl of white vinegar on the top rack to break up lime scale and odors.
4. Don’t Forget the Soft Surfaces
Dust mites and allergens love to hide in fabrics over the winter.
- Wash Curtains & Drapes: Most can go in the machine on a gentle cycle, but check the labels first.
- Vacuum the Mattress: Sprinkle some baking soda on your mattress, let it sit for an hour, then vacuum it up to neutralize odors.
- Rotate Rugs: This ensures even wear and gives you a chance to deep-clean the floor underneath.
5. Declutter for Clarity
You can’t clean clutter; you can only move it around.
- The Three-Box Method: As you go through each room, keep three boxes: Keep, Donate, and Toss. If you haven’t used it since last spring, it might be time to let it go.
